Sometimes we need something wonderful to look forward to. So although it is October 21st, I have determined that getting ready for Christmas has begun at our house.
I know, I know, some of you are groaning, “Not another one of those people…” you’re saying. And others are saying, “Yes! The countdown is on! I love SNOW! I love CHRISTMAS! It’s my FAVOURITE!”
For awhile now Christmas has stressed me out. First Christmas in December. Then a birthday in January, then one in February and then TWO in March… that’s just in our immediate family alone. So, all things considered, I think starting Christmas prep in October is just the ticket.
7 Reasons I Love Christmas
Do you hear Tevye from Fiddler On the Roof singing right now?
Traditions… I love making new ones and enjoying old ones. I love enjoying and experiencing other people’s traditions.
As a child we had a tree, and then as I got older we spent most Christmas’ traveling, so we didn’t usually have one. My husband loves having a tree, so we put one up.
I love the way it sparkles, the Christmasy feeling it gives as my husband and I relax together with the children sleeping. Maybe watching a show, or reading while the snow lightly falls outside.
I love how my dad reads the story of the first Christmas, Jesus’ birth, to all of us. The way my mom’s house smells of tastey treats and cinnamon.
What are some of your traditions?
I love the music. I just do. One of my favourite albums is by Shane and Shane. I have included a youtube video below of one of my favourite Christmas songs by them… the hubs and I sang it at church a December or two ago. Play it as you read if you’d like…
Some years I’ve been asked to go out carolling, and that’s been fun too. After all…

I also love the music because a lot of it speaks of Jesus. Silent Night, Holy Night. Mary Did You Know. The First Noel. And many others. I love it when 4 part harmony breaks out to these beautiful songs that have been sung for many generations.
And then grooving to some good old Feliz Navidad and Jingle Bell Rock is a hoot too.
HELLO! Yes please. I’ll take some of that, some of that, and more of that… don’t be shy, pile it on!
Oh dear, I’m going to have to get a good exercise program going at this rate… or be like my mom… make the food, but don’t eat the food… insert sad face here. (Okay, that’s an exaggeration about my mom…) Something about entering the 30’s made my body not react the same to the yummy treats I love the same. I hope I’m not alone?
Even the coffee (of course), the special creamers, the hot chocolate or even tea to warm from the chill of outside.
Family, friends, coworkers… everyone getting together to have a good time, to bless one another, to wear ugly sweaters, to drink hot chocolate, eat their favourite foods (or stare at their favourite foods), exchange presents… and so on.
Putting on Christmas dinners for the less fortunate, or an excuse to bring over some treats to neighbours we barely ever speak to.
It’s truly better to give than to receive. I have started making my shopping list (today) for my loved ones. It’s fun. It’s fun to think of and shop for things that will put a smile on the faces we love so much. The hubs is the hardest… don’t worry, I’ll think of something. You’re not really worried are you? It’s just me then? Humph. Okay.
But Christmas is not about just giving to our loved ones. It’s important to reach outside the four walls of our homes. Reaching out to those who don’t have many loved ones, or filling a plate with treats for friends or people that you just know would appreciate it. Filling a shoebox with Samaritan’s Purse to bless a child who might not get anything else.
Our church blesses a local school with gifts for every child. That’s something we give to. The children that attend there don’t have a lot… and it’s a huge blessing for US to give.
Everyone is so HAPPY
Unless you go into the malls 10 days before Christmas… especially the night before Christmas…. WATCH OUT… and on the roads… okay we will cover this a bit later in the reasons to start early preparations…. But, really people are happy… aren’t they?
Celebrating a Certain Birthday
Now they say Jesus wasn’t actually born on December 25th. Be that as it may, this is when we celebrate it. And I don’t want to forget the reason for the season, the main event, the Guest of Honour.
We don’t do Santa around here… my kids will not grow up believing in him… I mean besides, it is Jesus that provides for the gifts, and mommy and daddy that go buy them… why would we give St. Nick all the credit?
Yes, I know I quoted Elf earlier, my husband and I do enjoy that movie, but my kids will grow up knowing the real reason for Christmas. That’s our house… I’ll try to get my kids to not spoil it for your kids if that’s what you’re worried about…
I’m sure I could think of more reasons… I mean, the hubs proposed days before Christmas, he took me to a beautiful candlelight orchestra concert at a beautiful cathedral downtown. At dinner before that I heard a piano playing Christmas Carols… I knew instantly it was my friend Marcy… yes, he arranged that. He totally gets me. He’s a good man, and I get to spend my life with this kind of thoughtfulness!
So Now for the reasons for getting started early… I’m going to make this snappy because this is getting long already… and I could go on for DAYS!
4 Reasons to Start Christmas Prep Early
Does anyone else feel like there’s no time in December? Just running from one thing to the next looking like the turkey you’re going to serve on Christmas day? And you’re shopping with all the other sardines in the mall, driving on slippery roads with anxious people who seem to be late everywhere you go…
Well, this year, I am determining to start right away. Starting with my lists, my cards and my baking. I have even set some goals on my calendar. We shall see if this works.
I love being organized, and yet somehow it seems almost every year Christmas sneaks up on me! I think it’s because if you wait until December it’s too late to be organized… nope, it’s time to PANIC! Not this year. This is going to be one organized woman… I’ll keep you posted on how that goes….
It’s easier to stay on budget when you are not panicking because Christmas is TOMORROW! The hubs and I determine to not go into debt at this time of year. Staying within your means is key to actually enjoying the holidays.
Time for Celebrating!
Come December I want to be celebrating and making memories, not baking anymore, not shopping (worst time to shop people is in December… actually I find here in Canada there are more sales in November anyway! Yay! Win win!) I want to go for walks in the snow (assuming we have any by Christmas… last year we didn’t… yes, in Canada), I want to listen to Christmas music, read stories to my kids, snuggle up with my hubby on the couch and watch Christmas movies, go to Christmas parties…. not be stressing… and PANICKING.
So this year I shall pace myself, and make good use of my freezer to start my baking. I will order what I can online finding good deals, and go to the stores for the rest. I will be mostly done by December 1st when we will start decorating the house. And I will simply enjoy every minute of making memories with family, friends, and even the neighbours I plan to share some goodies with.
To the hubs – accountability, babe, these are my goals.
Oh, and you’re going to help me… 🙂
