A Sneak Peak | Hidden Parts

The past nine months have been wild.  In January I started writing my first historical fiction novel.  96,000 ish words later I finally added those two amazing words.

I wrote my first manuscript from 2007-2011.  It was a contemporary YA (young adult) novel.  Maybe someday I will publish it, but for now it’s on the shelf.

In 2017 I compiled all the blog posts I wrote on the Proverbs 31 woman into a book and renamed it “Worth More Than Rubies”.  As I mentioned in a previous post, you won’t find them on my blog at the moment.  But I hope to have it up in ebook form sometime in the future.

Historical fiction has always been my favourite (credit to author Lori Wick).  Not that I don’t enjoy reading other genres because I do.  As long as they are clean fiction, of course.  Christian fiction.

Reading historical fiction is one thing, though.  Writing it was another.  The research intimidated me.  But this past January when this plot line hit me, I realized I had to take the plunge.

Hidden Parts

Hidden Parts, a historical novel, is based in 1919.  Right after World War 1 and a little more than three years after the fire in the Centre Block on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

The story begins in England and migrates to Canada.  Nova Scotia at first, then onto Ottawa by train.

There were so many details to research.  When did plumbing happen in England… and when in Canada?  How long did a steamship take to cross the Atlantic in 1919?  How long did a letter take to arrive from England to Canada?  The Peace Tower was completed in 1927 but where was the construction at in 1919?  That was a tricky one.

My husband was beginning to feel like we had the entire library at our house.  I didn’t really see why that was a problem…

The theme scripture for this book is Psalm 27:5.

For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
Psalm 27:5 KJV

This scripture has resonated in my spirit now for a couple of months.  I hadn’t found it in January when I started writing Hidden Parts, but one day Psalm 27:5 appeared in my devotions.  And I heard the Lord say so clearly “read that one in the King James Version”. And there it was.

Next week I’m headed off to a writer’s conference with American Christian Fiction Writers.  I’ve been a member of this group since May and I’ve learned so much.  I’m looking forward to learning more!

I also get to see my sister!  Win win!

That’s all for now, with only days away until I leave for the States, I’m soaking up time with my husband and sons…  and finishing up conference prep.

Six sleeps – the longest I have ever been away from my kids (feels like a big leap from two sleeps).

Big shout out to my husband who has been so supportive in my writing journey from day one!  You’re amazing honey!!
